What does it take to truly live a creative life?

The author, Liz Gilbert, wrote a new wonderful book named Big Magic last year.(She is already famous for her previous book “Eat Pray Love”)

On Saturday I came across a TED talk where she shares her best pieces of advice for living a meaningful creative life. I was truly inspired and it didn’t take long before I got the audiobook which is about 5 hours long. It is very easy to listen to and quite short in audiobook terms. You can get the book here Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear and the audiobook here  or in Tunes.

Liz Gilbert talks about how creativity works, how important it is to be creative, and how we have to overcome our fears in order to make art. We have to learn to go where any idea may take us. It is a sort of a self-help book but you won’t find a list of “10 ways to be more creative” but the thing is, I find this book amusing and a lot of fun. There are interesting facts, lovely anecdotes on the nature of inspiration, ideas, and creativity.

She wrote: “Perfection is the death of all good things, perfection is the death of pleasure, it’s the death of productivity, it’s the death of efficiency, it’s the death of joy. Perfection is just a bludgeon that goes around murdering everything good. Somebody once said I was disingenuous for saying this, because surely I try to make my work as good as it can be. And that’s absolutely true — but there’s a really big difference between “as good as it can be” and perfection.” Liz Gilbert

  2. This is so great Magny I am glad you post this! And I will check out her great book it is very important to be always yourself as an Artist and yes conquer your fears and need to be perfect! Over time I learned that with my art I have to be fearless and free! I am completely agree with what she say “Perfection is the death of all good things, perfection is the death of pleasure, it’s the death of productivity, it’s the death of efficiency, it’s the death of joy. Perfection is just a bludgeon that goes around murdering everything good. Somebody once said I was disingenuous for saying this, because surely I try to make my work as good as it can be. 4. I found this quote fascinating: ” “Perfection is the death of all good things, perfection is the death of pleasure, it’s the death of productivity, it’s the death of efficiency, it’s the death of joy. Perfection is just a bludgeon that goes around murdering everything good. ”

It’s true. It’s the flaws in a work that make it human…even as we strive to make our work as perfect as possible.
