How perfect life is, when you just have a little bit of summer and some time off. I need to just relax and do nothing. The smell of the sea, the feel of the sand between my toes, the gentle breeze and I know that I am on the beach. It hits me that I am actually finally relaxing. I can’t remember the last time I felt so relaxed while painting. Yes – even on the beach on holidays, I have my a sketchbook and my favorite array of colors.

Relaxing like this on the beach gave me a new idea for a mini holiday project. I have an idea for a challenge to keep me creative without being too demanding and still allow me to relax in the gentle Mediterranean breeze.
I look around and pick the main colors I see and make some abstract forms. To get the feeling of the place I am looking at the sizes of the thing I see, if there some strawberries somewhere I paint a tiny red dot, and if I see the sea I might paint lots of blue.
I may mimic the form too. I will not ignore the ugly stuff, so if I see a brown gutter or drain pipe, I will paint it long and thin. This way I have created some new abstract watercolor paintings in a combination of colors I would not usually use together. The place I find myself in will dictate the colors and abstract shapes that I draw.
It is a perfect holiday project because it is not very demanding. It is easy to do because I am not spending a lot of energy on drawing precise objects, or getting one particular color exactly right I am just trying to get a general feel for form and colors. I have all of my watercolors in an old cigar box, I have picked up half-pans here and there. Most of my colors are Sennelier, but, some are Schmincke and a few are Winston & Newton
You know, I love the results and I’m sure that this little summer project will not end here.
